Michael Jackson is arguably one of the world’s most influential artists of all time. He sprung onto the music scene at the age of eleven, as part of The Jackson 5, which was made up of his older siblings. In 1968, The Jackson 5 signed with Motown Records and set a new record after their first four singles peaked at #1 On the Billboard Hot 100.
In 1979, Michael released his solo album Off The Wall. It was the first album to ever produce four US top ten hits. It reached #3 on the Billboard 200 and has sold over twenty million copies worldwide. Michael later won numerous awards for the record, including American Music Awards for Favourite Soul/R&B Album, Favourite Male Soul/R&B Artist and Favourite Soul/R&B Single; and Billboard Music Awards for Top Black Artist and Top Black Album; as well as a Grammy Award for Best Male R&B Vocal Performance.
In 1982, Michael released his second album with Epic, Thriller. The album remained in the top ten of the Billboard 200 for eighty consecutive weeks and thirty-seven of those weeks at the peak position. It was the first album to have seven Billboard Hot 100 top ten singles and sold 104 million copies worldwide, and won Michael eight Grammy Awards in 1984. The album is often referred to as the best-selling album of all time.
Michael Jackson had officially earned his title as ‘the King of Pop’. In 1983, Michael debuted the moonwalk on a television show that was aired to over 47 million viewers, it then became his signature dance move.
During the late 1980s, Michael began to take on a more eccentric persona. He underwent a series of plastic surgeries to his face, and was diagnosed with a skin disorder in the mid 1980s, which – due to a sensitivity to sunlight – resulted in his skin growing paler. Though there are persistent rumours that he has chosen to have his skin bleached.
Michael is one of the few artists to have been inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame twice, and has won 13 Grammy Awards for 13 number one singles, more than any other male artist in the Hot 100 era. He has sold over 750 million albums worldwide.
