Carrie Underwood Adding “Sound of Music” to Repertoire

Filling a pair of pretty big shoes, Carrie Underwood officially signed on to portray Maria Von Trapp in a live TV broadcast of “The Sound of Music.”

On Friday (November 30), Robert Greenblatt, chairman of NBC Entertainment announced, “Speaking for everyone at NBC, we couldn't be happier to have the gifted Carrie Underwood take up the mantle of the great Maria von Trapp.”

The three-hour special is based on the original Broadway show and will air during the 2013 holiday season.

"She was an iconic woman who will now be played by an iconic artist,” Greenblatt added in his statement.

In the first Broadway production, Von Trapp was played by Mary Martin. In 1965, Julie Andrews portrayed the character and lead the film to its Best Picture of the Year Oscar.

Although Miss Underwood is most notable recognized for her thriving music career she has appeared in acting roles on “How I Met Your Mother” and in the film “Soul Surfer.”
