Rafael Nadal was born June 3 1986, and is a professional tennis player who has been ranked no.1 in the world since August 2008. He was born in Manacor, Majorca to parents Sebastián Nadal and Ana María Parera.

At the ripe age of three years old, Rafael was introduced to tennis by his uncle – Toni Nadal – who was a former professional tennis player. Toni has been coaching him ever since. When he was just eight years old, Rafael won the under-12s regional tennis championships. Toni spotted the talent straight away and intensified their training sessions, he even converted Rafael to a left-handed player despite the fact that Rafael was naturally right-handed. At twelve years of age, Rafael won the Spanish and European tennis titles in his age group. He had previously been playing football throughout the years, but things had reached a point where Rafael had to choose just one sport, and he chose tennis.

2001, he defeated former Grand Slam champion Pat Cash in a clay-court exhibition match.[15] By the age of 16, Nadal was ranked in the world's top 50 players – he was the second youngest man to be ranked this high.

It was in 2004 at the Miami Masters that he played his first match against Roger Federer (who was ranked world no.1 at the time) and won in straight sets. Later in 2005, at the Australian Open, Nadal lost to Lleyton Hewitt. Then, a few months later, again at the Miami Masters, Nadal faced up against Federer but was beaten in five sets. Despite these two setbacks, both matches were considered to be breakthrough games for Nadal.

On July 25, 2005, Nadal became world no.2 before he had even turned twenty years old – he was the third person in history to do this. Throughout 2006, Nadal suffered a series of losses and also various injuries to his feet and shoulders. He had various wins and losses throughout 2007, with numerous of these losses being to Roger Federer, who had become one of Nadal’s main rivals professionally.

However, in 2008 Nadal defeated Federer in the Wimbledon finals, in what has been said to be one of the greatest finals ever.
