Muhammad Ali was born Cassius Marcellus Clay Jr. on January 17, 1942 in Louisville, Kentucky. He was named after his father and to this day remains the only man to have won the linear heavyweight championship three times.

Ali turned to boxing when he was only twelve years old, after his bike was stolen. Under the guidance of trainer Fred Stone, Ali pursued an amateur career in boxing and went on to win six Kentucky Golden Gloves titles, two national Golden Gloves titles, an Amateur Athletic Union National Title, and the Light Heavyweight gold medal in the 1960 Summer Olympics in Rome.

After his triumph in the Summer Olympics, Ali decided to pursue a professional career as a boxer. He returned to Louisville and won his first professional fight there in late 1960. Instead of following the normal boxing style (carrying the hands high to defend the face), Ali followed a style which he coined ‘float like a butterfly, sting like a bee’, whereby he relied on foot speed and quickness to avoid punches and carried his hands low.

Ali built a reputation by correctly predicting the round in which he would finish opponents, and from 1960 – 1963 he had a record of 19-0, with fifteen knockouts.

In 1967, Ali appeared for his scheduled induction into the U.S. Armed Forces. His name was called to step forward three times, yet each time he refused to step up. Ali was warned that he was committing a felony punishable by five years in prison and a fine of $10,000. Still, he refused to move when called and consequently the New York State Athletic Commission suspended his boxing license and stripped him of his title. However, he was allowed to fight again in 1970.

Ali regained his title on October 30, 1974 by defeating champion George Foreman in the ‘Rumble in the Jungle’, and defeated almost every top heavyweight in his era. However, since the early 1980s, Ali has suffered from Parkinsons. Despite this, he still remains a prominent public figure.

Muhammad Ali has been married four times and has seven daughters and two sons, and has even had a movie Ali made, starring Will Smith, based on his boxing career.
