Kevin Rudd was born 21 September 1957. He was born in Nambour, Queensland and grew up on a dairy farm in nearby Eumundi. Rudd joined the Australian Labour Party in 1972 when he was just fifteen years old. During his university years, Rudd met his now wife Terese Rein, and they married in 1981. This was the same year that Rudd joined the Department of Foreign Affairs – where he served until 1988.

In 1988, Rudd was appointed Chief of Staff to the Labour Opposition Leader in Queensland, Wayne Goss. Then in 1989, he became Chief of Staff to the Premier when the Labour party won office, a position which he held until 1992. It was November 1998 when he made his first speech to the Australian House of Representatives, and in 2001 he was appointed Shadow Minister for Foreign Affairs.

Rudd criticised the Howard Government over its support for the United States, and helped to define the position Labour would take in regards to the 2003 invasion of Iraq. In 2006, an opinion poll indicated voter support for Rudd was double that for Beazley – who was leader of the Labour party at the time. Later that same year, Rudd announced his candidacy for the leadership and was elected Leader with 49 votes to Beazley's 39.

Rudd stressed that the areas of industrial relations, the war in Iraq, climate change, Australian federalism, social justice, and the future of Australia's manufacturing industry were his major policy concerns and he quickly made an impact on the public with his ability to appear ‘more human’ than others in parliament.

Rudd was sworn in as Prime Minister on December 3 2007, and was the first Prime Minister not to mention the Queen in his oath into office. Since his election as Prime Minister, Rudd has signed the Kyoto Protocol, and issued a formal apology to the Indigenous Australians for the stolen generations, which was extremely well received and represented a poignant moment in history. He also overhauled John Howard’s Workchoices regime, and plans are under way for the withdrawal of Australian troops from the Iraq War.
