John Faulkner was born on 12 April 1954 in Leeton, New South Wales. He attended Macquarie University in Sydney, where he studied and graduated in Arts and Education. After graduating from university, John Faulkner spent time teaching in government schools, and it was not until later that he branched into politics.

From 1980 until 1989, John Faulkner was the Assistant General Secretary of the NSW Australian Labor Party, and in 1989 he became a member of the Australian National Labor Party National executive. Also in 1989, Faulkner succeeded as left-wing minister in the Senate, and later progressed to Minister for Veterans Affairs in 1993. Between 1993 and 1994, John Faulkner held the role of Minister for Veterans Affairs as well as Minister for Defence Science and Personnel. After this, he was appointed Minister for the Environment, Sport and Territories – and held a seat in the cabinet – a role that he remained in from 1994 to 1996.

In 1996, John Faulkner went on to become Leader of the Opposition in the Senate, as well as a member of the Opposition Shadow Ministry. He remained there between 1996 and 2004, during which he went through a series of role changes that included portfolios such as Shadow Minister for Social Security, Public Administration and Home Affairs.

Faulkner was appointed the National President of the Australian Labor Party in October 2006, a role that stretched through until February 2008. Currently, John Faulkner serves as Vice-President of the Executive Council, Special Minister of State, as well as Cabinet Secretary.
