Barack Obama was born on the 4th August 1961, and is now the first African American to be elected as the President of the United States of America. Upon finishing high school, Obama moved to Los Angeles where he studied for two years at Occidental College. He then transferred to Columbia University in New York City, where he majored in political science with a specialization in international relations.

In late 1988, Obama entered Harvard Law School and was selected as an editor of the Harvard Law Review at the end of his first year, based on his grades and a writing competition. Then, in February 1990, he was elected president of the Law Review – the first black president of the Law Review. It was a full-time volunteer position functioning as editor-in-chief and supervising the Law Review's staff of eighty editors.

For twelve years, Obama was employed as a professor at the University of Chicago Law School, teaching constitutional law. From 1992 – 1996, he was classified as a Lecturer, but then became a Senior Lecturer from 1996 to 2004. He met his wife, Michelle, in 1989, whilst working at the Chicago law firm of Sidley Austin. Michelle was assigned as Obama's adviser at the firm and they began dating later that summer. They got engaged in 1991, and were married on October 3, 1992. The couple has two daughters, Malia Ann and Natasha.

In 1996, Obama was elected to the Illinois Senate, taking over from State Senator Alice Palmer as Senator from Illinois' 13th District. He was reelected to the Illinois Senate in 1998, and then again in 2002, however he lost a Democratic primary run for the U.S. House of Representatives in 2000, to Bobby Rush by a small margin. Obama resigned from the Illinois Senate in November 2004 following his election to the US Senate.

In February 2007, Obama announced his candidacy for President of the United States, and throughout his campaign emphasized the issues of rapidly ending the Iraq War, increasing energy independence, and providing universal health care. Finally, on November 4, 2008, Barack Obama defeated John McCain in the general election and became the first African American to be elected President of the United States.
